A small hamburger joint may seem like an unusual place for the birth of a root beer legend. But Fitzs Drive-In is exactly where it started in 1947. Noted for incredible smoothness and thick, creamy texture, Fitzs Root Beer was served in mugs and quickly became the root beer of choice among St. Louisans.
It still is. Our recipe is a closely-guarded secret and contains many of the ingredients used in the original. Unlike most soft drinks, Fitzs continues to use pure cane sugar. The old-fashioned goodness of Fitzs must be tasted to be believed. Curb service and thirty-cent hamburgers may be a thing of the past, but the distinctive, satisfying taste of Fitzs Root Beer lives on.
Fitzs American Grill & Bottling Works may be the only restaurant in America where you can watch a vintage root beer bottling line in operation while you enjoy your meal. The equipment dates back to the early 1940s, and is easily viewed from the main dining room. Fitz's does not necessarily bottle every day. If you want to see the bottling line operating, please call our hostess at 314 726-9555 to confirm the operating schedule on your intended day of visit.
The restaurant is located in the historic Delmar Loop area of St. Louis, site of the St. Louis Walk of Fame and just a few minutes from Forest Park and many popular attractions. A full menu is offered, from gourmet hamburgers to delicious salads and entrees. Weather permitting, you can enjoy relaxing on our patio.
Fitzs loves kids, so theres plenty to keep them amused at Fitzs: the fascinating bottling line, a colorful art deco interior and special kids meals and treats.
Upstairs at Fitzs you will find a full service bar featuring a selection of draft beers, billiards, games and a big screen tv. Its a great place to meet friends and unwind.
