Charlotte's Rib gets its name from Charlotte Peters, the dynamic star of St. Louis' daytime television "The Charlotte Peters Show" which aired from 1947 to 1969. Our famous sauce was created from a Peter's family recipe passed down from generation to generation.
Charlotte's Rib was founded in Kirkwood by Herb and Pat Schwarz, Charlotte Peter's daughter and son-in-law, in 1977. In 1978, they established a new location in Ballwin. The resturant can now be found in Claymont Center and the tradition of great barbeque is carried on by Scott and Lisa, Charlotte's granddaughter and son-in-law.
Herb took his special brand of expertly smoked bbq and trademark sauce to the 1981 American Royal Barbeque Cook-Off in Kansas City and walked away with the grand prize for his sensational pork. In 1982, Pat's chili recipe was an award winner at the Regional Chili Cook-Off in St. Louis. As their restaurant flourished, the demand for their sauce grew. In 1985, they began marketing their original sauce, Mild Hickory, and started producing different variations; Spicy Southern, Western Blend and Lo-Cal. All these sauces are now available at Dierberg's grocery store.
