A taste for the fanciful is actually not so new for Mr. Kaufman. Last year he lavishly reimagined the fairy-tale collisions of Stephen Sondheim’s “Into the Woods” at Kansas City Repertory. And while the three years he spent immersed in Beethoven’s music to write and direct “33 Variations” were hardly a lark, the experience whetted his appetite “to be with music in the room, and to keep exploring the narrative power of music.” Read the whole article.

Don’t expect to see much of Eric Rosen in Kansas City this fall. Kansas City Repertory Theatre’s seemingly inexhaustible artistic director is spreading the Rep brand as he restages big, complicated shows in Los Angeles and Seattle: “Venice,” the dystopian hip-hop musical Rosen directed and co-wrote with Matt Sax, and “A Christmas Story, the Musical,” adapted from the popular movie written and narrated by Jean Shepherd. TIME MAGAZINE DECLARES VENICE THE YEAR'S BEST MUSICAL!
Richard Zoglin, theatre critic for Time Magazine attended a performance of Venice on a recent visit to Kansas City. He reviewed it on Time Magazine's website and stated: "And so, once again, it took a trip outside New York - to Kansas City, MO., which happens to be my hometown - to find a show to really get excited about."
