» Don't Ignore Treatment
If varicose veins are severe, they can rupture or form ulcers on the skin (this requires immediate attention). The variety of treatments for varicose veins range from injection sclerotherapy to laser treatments. A consultation with a vein treatment specialist will help you determine which treatment is best for you.

» What Causes Varicose Veins?
Varicose veins are caused by faulty valves and weakened walls within the veins. Normally, these one-directional valves keep the blood flowing efficiently against gravity up toward the heart. But when these valves fail to function properly, the blood pools, pressure builds up, and the veins become weak, enlarged and twisted. Some people may be more likely than others to develop varicose or spider veins due to genetics, old age or hormonal changes. Varicose veins may also result from conditions that increase pressure on the leg veins, for example being overweight, pregnant, or doing jobs that require prolonged standing.

» What you should know about Varicose Veins
Varicose veins are the blue or purplish enlarged veins you typically see bulging out of a person's leg. They affect approximately 15 percent of men and 25 percent of women. They can form anywhere on the legs, from the groin to the ankle, but appear most often on the backs of the calves or on the inside of the legs. Similar to varicose veins, spider veins are smaller and closer to the surface of the skin.

» Varicose Veins Information

Veins carry blood from the body to the lungs and heart. Failure to circulate the blood properly can cause veins to bulge with pools of blood. Varicose veins are veins that may appear purple or blue, twisted and bulging close to the surface of the skin. The most common area for varicose veins to appear are the backs of the calves or on the inside of the legs, but they can form anywhere on the legs, from the groin to the ankle. Varicose veins develop when you have faulty valves in your veins and weakened vein walls. Normally, the one-directional valves in these veins keep the blood flowing efficiently against gravity up toward the heart. However, when these valves do not function properly, the blood pools, pressure builds up, and the veins become weakened, enlarged, and twisted. Some people may be more likely than others to develop varicose veins and spider veins because of inherited characteristics (genetics), the aging process, or hormone changes. Varicose veins may also result from conditions that increase pressure on the leg veins, for example being overweight or pregnant. If the varicose veins are severe, they can rupture or ulcers can form on the skin.
