McCaughen and Burr was founded in 1840 and is the oldest continuously operating art gallery west of the Mississippi River. Throughout the years, the gallery has been instrumental in helping to establish St. Louis as a major venue for Artists. From the Westward Expansion to the present, McCaughen and Burr has been integral in the advancement of the Missouri Art Scene.

Today McCaughen and Burr specializes in American paintings and prints from the 19th and early 20th century with a focus on works by Missouri, St. Louis and Regionalist painters. T.H. Benton, Joe Jones, George Caleb Bingham, Joseph Vorst, Oscar Berninghaus, Paul Cornoyer, Joseph Meert, Norma Malerich, James Godwin Scott and Joseph Meeker are but a few of the important painters in our inventory. In addition, we maintain a collection of the works of eminent WPA artists and painters.

The early Indiana painters, a colony in which we also specialize, include works by T.C. Steele, Dale Bessire, John Adams, Ada and Adolph Shulz and others. McCaughen and Burr also represents a select group of living Missouri painters. Works by Edward Boccia, R.H. Dick and John Odell are featured in the gallery. These painters represent the very best artists currently working in the St. Louis art milieu.

The gallery maintains an active group of clients, including private collectors, museums, interior designers and other dealers. We are always interested in purchasing or receiving on consignment works of art in our various specialties.
